Johs in script and HAND MADE IN DENMARK mark this bent pickaxe as the work of the Danish carver Mogens Johansen.
This is a bent pickaxe pipe with a smooth bowl, a light sandblast on the bottom of the bowl only, a vulcanite saddle stem and a fishtail bit. There is no filter. It is a pre-smoked estate pipe in good condition.
THE MARKS
- Johs, in script
- HAND MADE IN DENMARK
THE MAKER
As noted when the pipe came in: Mogens "Johs" Johansen lives and works in Frederikshavn, Denmark, and makes about two thousand pipes each year. Many of his shapes may look familiar, because he carved many pipes for Bjarne. Many of his shapes are variations on Danish billiards, brandies, Dublins and freehands, finished smooth, sandblasted, rusticated or with a mix of these textures. We hold no dating record for Johs pipes, so we give no year.
THE SHAPE
A pickaxe is a geometric shape: the bottom of the bowl comes to a sharp, pointed base, and the shank meets the bowl in the middle of its side rather than at the bottom. On this pipe the bowl is smooth, and only the pointed bottom is lightly sandblasted, which sets the two textures against each other. The bent vulcanite saddle stem ends in a fishtail bit, which flattens and widens toward the tip.
Condition: pre-smoked, in good condition, with darkening on the rim; please check the photographs, which show the pipe from every side, the chamber, the stem taken out, and the stamps close up.
