JEAN CLAUDE and the number 3 identify this pipe, while the rising horn bowl and amber-coloured mouthpiece give it its character. This is an unsmoked, new old stock briar pipe in a smooth straight horn shape, with a curved rim, an acrylic saddle stem, a fishtail bit and a 9mm filter fitting.
The number is presented as it appears on the pipe. It is not treated as a date, a grade or evidence for a particular designer. A fuller history of this individual example is not established by the marks, so its own shape and fittings take the place of an assigned manufacturing story.
THE MARKS
- Jean Claude stamped on the shank
- 3 stamped on the shank
The horn shape follows a continuous rising line through the bowl rather than separating it into an upright cylinder and a clearly defined heel. On this example the bowl broadens as it rises toward the curved rim. The side photographs show that movement, while the view from above shows the chamber within the wider rim. The smooth finish carries the grain across these curves without the interruption of a rusticated or sandblasted surface.
The mouthpiece is amber-coloured acrylic, not a claim of natural amber. Its saddle construction starts with a fuller section at the shank and steps down to the slimmer length leading to the bit. That change of section contrasts with the flowing outline of the bowl. The fishtail is the flattened mouthpiece at the end of the stem.
This pipe is fitted for a 9mm filter. The stem-out photograph shows the mouthpiece and fitting apart from the briar. Overall length is 148 mm, with a bowl height of 51 mm and a chamber depth of 42 mm; the measurements describe the particular pipe photographed rather than a catalogue size inferred from its number.
Condition: New old stock, unsmoked. Please examine the photographs for the appearance of the bowl, rim, chamber, shank and stem. No additional claim of flawless surfaces or absence of storage marks is made.
