This is a Hockey English Finish smooth apple pot with a long pencil shank, a long vulcanite tapered stem and a fishtail mouthpiece. There is no filter.
The shank carries Hockey in script, inside quotation marks, with ENGLISH FINISH in capitals under it. The script is clear, and ENGLISH FINISH is fainter.
THE MARKS
- "Hockey", in script inside quotation marks, on the shank
- ENGLISH FINISH on the shank, under it
Apple names the rounded bowl, and pot names its wide chamber; this bowl is 37 mm across and 32 mm high, a little wider than it is tall. A pencil shank is long and slim, and a thin light-coloured ring shows where the stem meets it. The tapered stem narrows toward the fishtail mouthpiece, and a metal stinger is fitted to its tenon, the part of the stem that goes into the shank.
The smooth finish is glossy, and grain lines show across the sides of the bowl.
No year is stamped on this pipe.
Condition: pre-smoked and in good condition, with darkness on the rim and faint scratches around the briar.
