An old school sandblast that deserves a good look: HILSON on the shank of a bent billiard, with a thin aluminum band and a vulcanite saddle stem that ends in a fishtail bit.
It is unsmoked, but long storage has left its signs. HILSON can be read; the letters and numbers after it, and in the line below, are worn too far to read. Please see the photographs for the surface and the chamber.
HILSON was the brand of the Hillen pipe factory in Bree, Belgium. Elbert Gubbels & Sons had made pipes in Roermond, in the Netherlands, since 1946, and in 1980 Gubbels bought the Bree factory with its Hilson brand; the Bree works closed soon after. Elbert Gubbels & Sons filed for bankruptcy in March 2012.
That history gives no year for a Hilson pipe, and none is given for this one.
THE MARKS
- HILSON on the shank
- further letters and numbers after HILSON and in a line below it, too worn to read
A billiard bowl has straight, upright walls; on this bent billiard the stem is bent. The thin aluminum band sits at the end of the shank, where the black vulcanite saddle stem meets it. A saddle stem is wide and flat near the shank and steps down to a thinner bit; this one ends in a fishtail. The pipe is made for a 9 mm filter.
The sandblast covers the bowl and the shank.
