Hilson Oxford (210) Reddish Smooth Straight Billiard Estate Pipe with 9mm Filter

HILSON over OXFORD, and 210, stamped on the shank of a reddish smooth straight billiard. This is a Hilson Oxford 210, with a thin metal band, a vulcanite tapered stem and a fishtail bit, made for a 9 mm filter.

It is pre-smoked and in good condition, with tiny faint scratches around the briar. The stamps are clear, HILSON a little faint in places. Please see the photographs for the rim and the chamber.

Hilson was the brand of Hillen, a pipe factory in Bree, Belgium. In 1980 the Dutch firm Elbert Gubbels & Sons of Roermond, the maker of Big Ben, bought the Bree factory together with the Hilson name, and Bree closed soon after. Gubbels had made pipes in Roermond since 1946.

The Hilson story gives no year for a pipe by its stamp, so no date is given for this one.

A billiard has a round bowl with straight, upright walls on a straight shank. The thin metal band sits at the end of the shank, where the black vulcanite stem meets it. The stem tapers toward the bit with no step and ends in a flattened fishtail. With the stem out, a metal tube shows on the tenon.

The finish is smooth, with a reddish stain, and the grain shows through it on the bowl.
