HILSON over AVANTI, and 211, on the shank: this is a Hilson Avanti 211, a reddish smooth bent brandy on a vulcanite tapered stem with a fishtail mouthpiece, made for a 9 mm filter.
It is pre-smoked and in good condition. There are faint scratches around the briar and a bite mark repair at the bottom of the shank; please see the photographs.
Here the bowl is round and full, the brandy form, named for its likeness to a brandy glass. The pipe is bent, and the stem narrows toward the fishtail. With the stem out, a filter shows in the tenon. The chamber is 45 mm deep and 20 mm across.
The finish is smooth and glossy, and grain lines show on the bowl.
HILSON was the brand of the Hillen pipe factory in Bree, Belgium. In 1980 Elbert Gubbels & Sons of Roermond, in the Netherlands, the maker of Big Ben, bought the Bree factory together with the HILSON name, and Bree closed soon after. Gubbels filed for bankruptcy in March 2012. No source dates a Hilson pipe by its stamp, so this one may come from either side of the 1980 sale.
