GORDON, and under it BRUYERE, stamped on the shank of a classic straight billiard. This is a Gordon billiard in a smooth finish, with a vulcanite tapered stem, a fishtail bit and no filter.
Condition: pre-smoked and very good, with faint scratches in the stain and dents around the briar. Both stamped lines are worn: GORD is clear, while the rest of GORDON and the whole BRUYERE line are faint.
THE MARKS
- GORDON stamped on the shank, GORD clear and the last letters faint
- BRUYERE stamped on the shank under GORDON, faint along the whole line
BRUYERE is the French word for briar. It names the material, not a place, so the stamp gives no country of origin, and no date is given for this pipe.
The billiard is the classic pipe shape: a cylindrical bowl with straight sides, set on a straight shank, with the stem carrying on in the same line.
On this pipe the bowl is 48 mm high and 37 mm wide, and the chamber is 20 mm across and 40 mm deep. The pipe is 150 mm long and weighs 44 g.
The stem is vulcanite, the hardened rubber that has long been the traditional material for pipe stems. It tapers from the shank to the bit and ends in a fishtail.
The finish is smooth and reddish-brown, and grain lines show on the bowl and on the shank.
