Tall and thin, a small chimney: that is a fair way to describe this Gordon Top Star, with a bowl 45 mm high and 29 mm wide. It is a smooth straight billiard in the classic style, on a vulcanite tapered stem with a fishtail bit and no filter.
Condition: pre-smoked, in fair condition and overall excellent. The only marks are darkness and burn spots; cleaning them away would lose a little of the complete inner circle shape. Please see the photographs.
THE MARKS
- GORDON stamped on the shank
- TOP STAR stamped on the shank under GORDON, lighter than the first line
No country can be read in the stamps, and no date is given for this pipe.
A billiard is the straight-lined classic of pipe shapes: a cylindrical bowl on a straight shank, with the stem following the same line. A billiard with a bowl clearly taller than it is wide is often called a chimney, after its upright look. This bowl stands 45 mm high on a width of 29 mm, and the chamber is 18 mm across and 38 mm deep.
The whole pipe is 144 mm long and weighs 29 g. The vulcanite stem tapers from the shank toward the bit and finishes in a fishtail.
The finish is smooth and reddish-brown, with grain lines showing on the bowl and the shank.
