Vuillard Dr Max 620S Saint-Claude Smooth Straight Billiard Estate Pipe

Vuillard in script inside a slanted frame, DR MAX in capitals, and 620S over SAINT-CLAUDE: this is a Vuillard Dr Max smooth straight billiard on a vulcanite saddle stem.

It takes no filter, and the stem ends in a fishtail mouthpiece.

The stamp names Saint-Claude, the French town that became the world capital of the briar pipe after briar arrived there in 1856. Vuillard is one of its pipe names. In 1988 it joined Chapuis-Comoy, the house behind the Chacom brand, together with Jeantet-David and Jean Lacroix, in a holding company called Cuty-Fort Entreprises. The makers shared their production, but each brand kept its own name. The meaning of Dr Max and of the number 620S is not known.

The billiard is the plain, classic pipe shape: a bowl shaped like a cylinder on a straight shank. This bowl is 50 mm high and 40 mm wide around a chamber 20 mm across and 44 mm deep, and the whole pipe is 142 mm long. The vulcanite stem meets the shank as a saddle and finishes in a fishtail mouthpiece.

The finish is smooth, and grain shows on the bowl. No date is given for this pipe.

Condition: pre-smoked, in very good condition.
