Butz-Choquin Flamme Handmade Pipe – 9mm Filter
Item and Shape Descriptions
This is a brand new, unsmoked Butz-Choquin Flamme briar tobacco pipe, handcrafted in St. Claude, France. The shape is a smooth, slightly bent curved Billiard/Brandy hybrid—a refined evolution of the classic Billiard with a subtle forward cant and gentle taper toward the base, giving it the rounded, ergonomic feel of a Brandy. The bowl is plump and rounded at the rim, with a smooth, flowing transition into the shank, ideal for both aesthetics and comfortable hand-held smoking.

History of the Shape
The Billiard is one of the oldest and most iconic pipe shapes, dating to the late 18th century, known for its straight shank and cylindrical bowl. The Brandy emerged in the early 20th century as a softer, more organic variant—its bowl mimicking the curve of a brandy glass, offering better heat distribution and hand comfort. This slightly bent Billiard/Brandy hybrid combines the structural integrity of the Billiard with the graceful taper and forward-leaning stance of a Brandy, a popular mid-century French innovation for enhanced smoking posture.
Butz-Choquin, established in 1858 in Metz and later based in St. Claude, the world capital of briar pipe making, is renowned for its artistic shapes and superior briar selection. The Flamme series represents their premium smooth-finished line, showcasing exceptional flame grain—a mark of top-grade briar. The “Fait Main” (handmade) stamp guarantees artisan craftsmanship, while “Filter 0” indicates factory drilling for 9mm filtration, a modern touch introduced in the 1970s for cooler, cleaner smokes. This pipe embodies St. Claude’s legacy of precision, beauty, and innovation.
