Eriksen Handmade in Denmark Smooth Brandy Estate Pipe, Vertical Grain

A star on each side of ERIKSEN, HANDMADE IN DENMARK under it and a single 3 above.

This is an Eriksen brandy on a black stem that is wide at the shank and steps down to a flat bit. The 3 and ERIKSEN are clear; HANDMADE IN DENMARK is small and partly faint.

THE MAKER

Eriksen is a second line of the Danish maker Erik Nording. Nording was a blacksmith at 15 and then an engineer. In the early 1960s he made pipes with Skovbo under the name SON, for Skovbo Og Nording, and a year or two later the company took his own name. It worked only in freehands at first, and the freehand boom that followed took it to a peak of 52 workers. Its other second line is Aalborg.

A brandy bowl is wide low down and draws in toward the rim. On this pipe the finish is smooth, the grain runs in lines up the bowl, and small dots of grain show on the bottom.

DATING

ERIKSEN is a Nording second, and no year is known for this form of the stamp, so all it gives is roughly the span of the Nording name, from the middle of the 1960s on. The meaning of the 3 is not known, and it does not narrow the date.
