STANWELL and 2002 stamped on a sterling silver army mount, a 925 beside them, and the crowned S inlaid in the stem. This is a Stanwell straight billiard in a smooth, shiny ebony-black finish, by Tom Eltang, with a spigot sterling silver army mount, an acrylic saddle stem, a 9mm filter and a fishtail bit.
It is pre-smoked and in very good condition. The rim has been sanded and cleaned and shows a faint stain. The stamps are on the silver band: STANWELL over 2002 and the 925 are on the band. It comes with a vintage original black Stanwell pouch.
The Stanwell story begins in the war. In 1942 Poul Nielsen set up pipe production, at first in beech, and the maker's own catalogue says simply that in the year 1942 a pipe production was set up. In the early 1940s there were beech pipes from six Danish factories, and five of them closed after the war. In 1948 the name Stanwell was registered as a trademark, Reg. No. 969-48, with a horse-drawn carriage as its logo. From 1952 the firm had new equipment and exported to Europe and the USA, and in 1965 production moved to a new modern factory in Borup, where the pipes were made until Danish production ended at the end of 2009 (some sources give 1969 for the move to Borup). The maker's catalogue from about 1982 says that Stanwell then supplied about 35% of Danish pipe exports, to about 40 countries. From 2010 the pipes are made by Barontini in Italy, limited editions excepted.

The crowned S is Stanwell's stem logo, used after the 1948 registration. Stanwell stamps literal years on some of its pipes, and for its Pipe of the Year the year is placed in the silverwork. The Stanwell shape list compiled by Bas Stevens and McNally gives Tom Eltang's work with the firm as starting in 1980.
This is a straight billiard with a spigot sterling silver army mount. The stem is acrylic with a saddle, and it ends in a fishtail bit. The pipe takes a 9mm filter.
