Aristocrat London Made Superman Bulldog Estate Pipe - Smooth Briar, Bent, Vulcanite Saddle Stem

The shank on this one carries a grade word you do not see often: SUPERMAN, stamped right alongside ARISTOCRAT LONDON MADE and MADE IN ENGLAND.

This is a bent bulldog in smooth briar, the shank stamped by the maker Aristocrat, fitted with a vulcanite saddle stem cut with a fishtail slot. There is no filter fitted; the bore runs open from chamber to bit.

The bulldog is one of the sturdier shape families in the rack. What sets it apart from its close cousin the Rhodesian is the shank-to-bowl junction: a bulldog typically carries a beveled ring or faceted shoulder where bowl meets shank, giving the profile a squared, purposeful break, where a Rhodesian softens that same line into a continuous curve. Bend that same architecture downward and you get a bent bulldog: the bowl rides lower, the weight shifts toward the bit, and the pipe reads as a clencher's shape rather than an all-day-in-the-hand shape.

The bowl stands 46mm tall with a bowl width of 46mm - near-square proportions in profile, which is the bulldog's stocky signature. The chamber runs 20mm across and 39mm deep, a narrow, deep well that holds a fair load and burns slowly if packed with care. At 49 grams and 155mm overall, it sits toward the heavier end for a pipe this size, and that weight is felt mostly at the bend, where a bent stem carries its mass closer to the teeth than a straight one does.

Smooth finish is the plainest presentation a pipemaker can choose for briar. There is no sandblast texture or rustication to hide flaws in the wood, so the surface has to be sound on its own before stain and wax go on top of it. Finish and grain: see the photographs.

The stem is vulcanite, worked in a saddle profile - a flat step down from the shank rather than a smooth taper into it - and finished with a fishtail slot at the bit, a splayed opening rather than a single round hole. A fishtail spreads the draw across a wider slit and tends to feel softer against the teeth than a round bit does. The mouthpiece narrows, or tapers, toward that slot.

This pipe has been smoked. Condition is graded fair. The briar shows a couple of dents around the bowl. No cracks or fills are noted.
