A Dr Plumb script with SUPER beneath it, 1S by the stem, and PLUMB with a red dot on the stem itself: this is a Dr Plumb Super dark sandblast straight billiard on a vulcanite tapered stem.
The stem ends in a fishtail mouthpiece and takes no filter.
Dr. Plumb's belongs to the family of brands around GBD. That house began in Paris in 1850 as Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger, working first in meerschaum and soon in briar. In 1902 it was sold to A. Oppenheimer & Co of London; a London factory opened in 1903, and a plant at Saint-Claude was working by 1906. In the 1920s the Cadogan Investments holding was formed over the Oppenheimer brands.
Dr. Plumb's is listed as a separate brand of that house, from 1925, for the French and Canadian market; Peter Piper and Marcee are two others. The Paris factory moved to Saint-Claude in 1952, and in 1981 GBD merged with Comoy's. No country is read in the stamps of this pipe, and no date is given for it.
THE MARKS
- Dr Plumb in script, stamped on the shank (worn)
- SUPER in capitals under the script
- 1S stamped on the shank next to the stem
- PLUMB in capitals and a red dot, on the stem
A billiard is the classic pipe shape: a bowl shaped like a cylinder, set on a straight shank. This bowl is 46 mm high and 35 mm wide around a chamber 20 mm across and 39 mm deep, and the pipe is 150 mm long. The vulcanite stem tapers from the shank to the fishtail bit.
The sandblast covers the bowl and the shank.
Condition: pre-smoked, in very good condition.
