Denicotea De Luxe Curling Bruyere Extra 400 Smooth Straight Estate Pipe

DENICOTEA arched over DE LUXE, and CURLING over BRUYERE EXTRA: this is a Denicotea De Luxe Curling, a smooth straight pipe that runs a little long, numbered 400, with a 9mm filter and a fishtail mouthpiece.

The black stem has a step partway along toward the bit.

Denicotea began in Cologne in 1932, when Willy Heineberg founded a business for filters, filter inserts, cigarette holders and pipes. Strictly, Denicotea is the name of its silica-gel filter, and holders and care products carry the same name. Advertisements in an Estonian newspaper in 1938 show the firm already selling abroad before the war. After the Second World War the head office moved to Bergisch Gladbach.

Besides pipes under its own name, the house sold pipes under other labels, among them Adsorba, Aldo Morelli and Wessex. A restorer has recorded another De Luxe Curling with a worn number, read as 118 or 119. Denicotea pipe numbers have no published key, so the meaning of 400 is not known.

Bruyere is the French word for briar. The bowl is 50 mm high and 38 mm wide around a chamber 20 mm across and 45 mm deep, and the whole pipe is 160 mm long.

The finish is smooth, and grain lines show on the bowl and on the shank. No date is given for this pipe.

Condition: pre-smoked, in good condition, with faint scratches in the stain around the briar.
