Denicotea Krocket Sandblast Straight Pot Estate Pipe - Vulcanite Saddle Stem, 9mm Filter

DENICOTEA is, at its root, the name of a filter: a silica-gel insert the company built its business on long before it became a name stamped into pipe shanks. This straight pot carries that name directly on the shank, paired with the model name KROCKET - not one of the fictional labels, Adsorba or Aldo Morelli, that the firm used on other lines sold into the German market.

The pipe is stamped DENICOTEA KROCKET on the shank. It is a sandblasted straight pot with a vulcanite saddle stem, a fishtail slot at the bit, and a 9mm filter bore through the shank - the filter format the Denicotea name was originally built on.

Willy Heineberg founded Denicotea in Cologne in 1932, manufacturing filters, filter inserts, cigarette holders, and pipes under one roof. After the Second World War the company's headquarters moved to Bergisch Gladbach, and the business, operated today in tandem with Composing-Studio GmbH, continues to trade under Denicotea both as a company name and as the filter brand itself. Distribution reached beyond Germany early: surviving Estonian advertising from 1938 shows the firm selling internationally before the war interrupted trade. Denicotea's pipe output was never limited to pieces carrying its own name - the company also issued lines under invented identities, among them Adsorba, a fantasy series credited to Luigi Crugnola for the German trade, and Aldo Morelli, a fictitious Italian name trademarked in 1992 and applied to pipes actually cut in Italy by makers including Cesare Barontini, Gigi, and Molina. This Krocket, by contrast, is stamped with the house name itself, not with one of those invented labels.

The shape is a straight pot: a short, wide-shouldered bowl fuller through the chamber than it is tall, set here with a straight vulcanite stem cut with a saddle profile and a fishtail slot at the bit. The pot sits between the bulldog and the billiard in the family of classic shapes - broader in the bowl than a billiard, without the diamond shank and stepped mounts that mark a bulldog. Its low center of gravity and wide bowl mouth make it a steady pipe to hold or to set down while lit, and the saddle stem presents a flatter bite surface at the bit than a tapered stem would. At 41mm across and 35mm deep, the chamber is proportioned for a slower, cooler smoke than a narrower bowl of similar height would give.

The bowl is sandblasted rather than smooth. Sandblasting is done by playing an abrasive stream against shaped briar, cutting away the softer summer growth in the grain and leaving the harder growth rings standing in relief - a texture that is functional as much as decorative, since it improves grip in the hand and can mask small surface flaws that a smooth finish would expose. Beyond the fact of the blast itself, the finish and grain of this particular pipe are best judged from the photographs.

Condition: this is a pre-owned, smoked pipe, reported in good condition. Tiny bite marks are present on the vulcanite stem. No other condition issues are noted.
