About this Piece
denicotea in lower-case letters on the shank, and the number 1018: this is a Denicotea 1018, a smooth bent brandy sitter with a vulcanite tapered stem and a fishtail mouthpiece.
A brandy bowl is rounded and closes in toward the rim, like a brandy glass, and on this pipe the bowl is narrower at the rim than lower down. A sitter is a pipe with a flat base, so it can stand upright by itself.
The pipe is bent. The stem narrows evenly toward the mouthpiece and ends in a fishtail, a bit that widens and flattens at the tip. With the stem out, a metal tube with a round tip shows on the tenon.
The finish is smooth, and grain lines show on the bowl.

THE MAKER
Willy Heineberg founded Denicotea in Cologne in 1932, as a firm for filters, filter inserts, cigarette holders and pipes. Properly speaking, Denicotea is the name of its silica-gel filter, and its holders and care products carry the same name.
In November and December 1938 the brand was advertised in an Estonian newspaper, a sign that it sold abroad before the war. After the Second World War the head office moved to Bergisch Gladbach. Besides pipes stamped Denicotea, the firm also sells pipes under other labels, among them Adsorba, Aldo Morelli and Wessex.
DATING
The denicotea mark runs from the founding of the firm in 1932 to the present, and this window is well documented. Denicotea pipe numbers have no published key, so 1018 does not narrow it, and no other mark on this pipe does. The stamps date this pipe only to 1932 or later.
Condition: pre-smoked and in good condition, with faint scratches around the briar; please see the photographs.
