ECHT BRUYERE in block capitals on a smooth patch of the shank, and a rustic finish all around it: this is an unsmoked rustic bent billiard on a vulcanite tapered stem, with a metal band at the shank end.
The stem ends in a fishtail mouthpiece and takes no filter. Both stamped words read in the close-up, BRUYERE more clearly than ECHT. The pipe is unsmoked.
THE MARKS
- ECHT in block capitals, stamped on the shank
- BRUYERE in block capitals, stamped under it
Echt is German for genuine, and Bruyere is the French word for briar, so the stamp promises genuine briar. It names no maker, and no date is given for this pipe.
A billiard is the classic pipe shape: a bowl shaped like a cylinder. On this bent example the bowl is 46 mm high and 38 mm wide around a chamber 20 mm across and 38 mm deep, and the vulcanite stem tapers from the metal band to the fishtail bit.
A rustic finish is cut into the briar with tools, leaving a rough, textured surface that the fingers can feel. Here it covers the bowl and the shank, and only a smooth patch on the shank is left plain to carry the stamp.
Condition: unsmoked.
