CHAP in spaced capitals over SELECTION A, with the number 13 near the stem: this is a Chap Selection A Canadian, a straight pipe in smooth briar with a tapered vulcanite stem, and it is unsmoked.
The stem ends in a fishtail mouthpiece, and there is no filter. Both stamp lines and the 13 read clearly in the close-ups.
THE MARKS
- CHAP stamped on the shank
- SELECTION A stamped on the shank, with a line under it
- 13 stamped on the shank, near the stem
A Canadian is a straight pipe with a long oval shank and a short tapered stem, so much of its length is briar. This one has a bowl 52 mm high and 39 mm wide, over a 47 mm deep chamber, and it is 148 mm long in all.
The finish is smooth, and the grain is the selling point: amazing vertical grain, with straight lines running along the shank and its underside, and birdseye on the side of the bowl.
No year is given for this pipe.
Condition: unsmoked.
