CHACOM, CENTENAIRE and 186 are the marks on this pipe, setting a French name against the familiar outline of a straight billiard. It is a smooth briar pipe with an acrylic tapered stem and a fishtail bit, made without a filter. It is pre-smoked and in good condition, with a little darkness on the inner rim.
The Chacom story belongs to the pipe-making country around Saint-Claude in the French Jura. Its roots reach back to the Comoy family, who were making boxwood and clay pipes in 1825. Briar entered the local trade during the following decades, changing both the material of the pipes and the scale of the industry that developed around them.
In 1879 Henri Comoy established H. Comoy & Co in London. The French works continued to supply bowls and briar preparations, linking Saint-Claude production with the English market. The Chapuis and Comoy families formalised their association as Chapuis-Comoy & Cie in 1922. The CHACOM brand followed in 1928, its name combining CHApuis and COMoy.
The company passed through a period under the La Bruyere name after the merger of 1932, then returned to the Chapuis-Comoy name in 1957. In 1988 it became part of the Cuty-Fort group alongside other Saint-Claude brands. That history places the name within the French pipe trade; it does not date this Centenaire 186 to any of those company changes.
THE MARKS
- CHACOM / CENTENAIRE stamped on the shank
- 186 stamped on the shank
- CC logo on the stem
The number 186 is recorded as a mark on the pipe, not used to assign an anniversary year or an undocumented production date. The shape is identified from the pipe itself: a straight billiard, with a tall rounded bowl standing above the heel and a shank leading directly back into the stem. Its 50 mm bowl height and 44 mm chamber depth give the proportions a clearer description than a general size label would.
The smooth finish leaves the grain visible across the bowl and shank. The side views, heel view and view of the rim show how the pattern changes around the wood. There is no sandblast or rustication here; the surface follows the shaped bowl directly, with its appearance best judged from the photographs.
The dark acrylic mouthpiece tapers from the shank toward the fishtail bit. The taper gives a continuous narrowing line, while the fishtail describes the flattened end of the mouthpiece. This is a no-filter pipe, and the stem-out photograph shows the fitting apart from the bowl. The small CC logo is visible on the stem.
Condition: Pre-smoked, in good condition, with a little darkness on the inner rim. The photographs show the bowl, rim, chamber, stem and marks. No further condition or manufacture-date claim is inferred from the line name.
