The chamber is bare briar. This Cavarelle has never been smoked, and every surface on it says so before you ever reach for a match.
Stamped CAVARELLE BEST BRIAR with the model number 115 on the shank, this is a smooth straight apple fitted with an acrylic saddle stem, cut with a fishtail bit and bored without a filter.
The apple is one of the oldest bowl families in pipe making: a rounded, slightly flattened bowl tapering into a shortish shank, sitting between the straight cylinder of a billiard and the fuller curve of a bulldog or prince. A straight apple like this one is built to sit upright, bowl first, filling the palm rather than the fingers - a shape as much about handling as about smoking, which is why collectors often keep one on the desk rather than in a rack drawer.
The saddle stem steps down from the shank in a distinct shoulder rather than tapering smoothly into it. That step is functional, not decorative: it lets the stem be pulled straight and reseated cleanly, session after session, without wearing a long taper loose. The bit is cut fishtail - the slot widens into two flat wings at the button instead of staying a single round hole - which spreads the draw across a broader opening at the lip and is why many smokers find it easier to hold steady between the teeth than a narrow round bit. There is no filter fitted here. The airway runs straight from chamber to button with nothing narrowing it along the way: the plain, unobstructed bore that briar pipes carried before cartridge filters became standard equipment, and one plenty of smokers still ask for by name because of the fuller, less resistant draw it gives.
Finish and grain: see the photographs. A smooth bowl has nowhere to hide: either the grain is worth looking at or the finish is doing all the work, and a buyer can judge that directly from the pictures.
