This one has never been reamed, never charred, never touched by a match. A Cavarelle Best Briar Dublin, still new old stock, exactly as it left the shelf before it ever reached a smoker's hand.
Stamped CAVARELLE BEST BRIAR, model 105, this is a long straight Dublin in a smooth finish, fitted with a tapered acrylic stem and a fishtail slot. No filter system is fitted. The 9mm figure here refers to the bore cut through the stem, a plain open airway rather than a filter chamber.
THE MARKS
- Shank stamped CAVARELLE BEST BRIAR, model 105
The Dublin is one of the oldest bowl profiles in the trade, its lineage running back through clay pipes before briar became the standard material. What defines it is the wall: a bowl that widens from a narrower base to a broader rim along a continuous taper, rather than holding a single cylinder like a billiard or ballooning into the round chamber of a bulldog. On this example that taper runs the full height of the bowl before it opens at the rim, and paired with a straight shank it reads as one unbroken line from bit to base.
The stem is acrylic, not vulcanite, and that material choice matters over time.
A smooth finish is built by taking the sanded bowl through progressively finer grits until the surface takes a bright polish, then staining and waxing to bring up whatever figure the briar shows underneath. It is the finish that leaves the wood most exposed to the eye, for better or worse depending on the block selected. Finish and grain on this particular bowl: see the photographs.
Condition: new old stock. Never smoked, per the seller's description. No cake in the chamber, no oxidation, no tooth marks reported. Pristine throughout, as expected of a pipe that has sat unused since it left the maker.
