Brebbia Linea Varese Patent 400 Sandblast Dublin Estate Pipe, Vulcanite Stem

BREBBIA, then LINEA VARESE, then PATENT 400, stamped in three lines on a smooth panel of a rough, rusticated shank. This is a Brebbia Linea Varese 400 Dublin, in a sandblast and rusticated finish, with a vulcanite stem that ends in a fishtail bit and no filter.

LINEA VARESE and PATENT 400 are clear; the BREBBIA line on top is faint, and the small emblem at the end of the LINEA VARESE line is too worn to name.

In 1947 Enea Buzzi and Achille Savinelli founded a joint pipe firm at Bosco Grosso di Brebbia, in the Varese area, and for its first years the pipes made there went out under the SAVINELLI name: exclusively until 1953, and the right to that name ran out in 1956. In 1953 the two men went separate ways. Savinelli built his own plant at Barasso, while Buzzi kept the Brebbia factory and started the M.P.B. brand (pipephil gives 1953; one source, monjure, dates the formal buyout to 22 June 1956).

Until 1968 the brand stamped M.P.B. on its pipes. In 1968 that logo gave way to a simple gold-outlined diamond, and the brand word on the pipe became Brebbia alone.

THE MARKS

- BREBBIA (faint) / LINEA VARESE / PATENT 400, on a smooth panel of the shank
- A small emblem at the end of the LINEA VARESE line, too worn to name
- PATENT: meaning not known

The marks help with the age. The stamp names BREBBIA, and no M.P.B. mark can be seen in it. Brebbia used its name alone from the 1968 change onward, so this pipe was most likely made in 1968 or later. The stem logo does not show in the photographs, so it cannot narrow the date, and no year is known for the Linea Varese line itself. One dealer lists a sister pipe from the same line, a Linea Varese Patent 402, as a panel sitter.

A Dublin bowl grows wider toward the rim. Here the chamber is 45 mm deep and 20 mm across, in a bowl 50 mm high and 36 mm wide. The vulcanite stem swells into a rounded collar just after the shank, then narrows into a long bit with a fishtail end.

The finish is sandblast and rusticated: a rough, deeply textured surface over the bowl and the shank, broken by one smooth panel on the shank that carries the stamp. Please see the photographs for the texture, the rim and the stem.

Condition: previously smoked, very good, with a darkness on the rim and tiny dents.
