This is a Brebbia Junior 773 from Italy: a lovat in a red sandblast finish, with an acrylic saddle stem and a fishtail bit. It is pre-smoked and in very good condition. A red leather bag and a tobacco pouch come with it.
THE MAKER
The Brebbia story starts in 1947, when Enea Buzzi and Achille Savinelli opened a joint firm at Bosco Grosso di Brebbia, near Varese. In those first years the pipes made there were sold under the Savinelli name. In 1953 the two men went separate ways: Savinelli built his own works, and Buzzi kept the Brebbia factory. His new mark was MPB, for Manifattura Pipe Brebbia (1953 by one account; another account dates the formal buyout to 22 June 1956). In 1968 the MPB mark gave way to a simple diamond with a gold outline, and from then on the pipes were called just Brebbia. In the 1990s Enea's son, Luciano Buzzi, managed the firm.
THE MARKS
- brebbia, in lower-case script (on the shank)
- JUNIOR (under the brebbia script)
- 773 (on the shank)
- ITALY (on the shank, read only in part in the photographs)
- a gold-outlined diamond (on the stem)
THE SHAPE AND THE STEM
A lovat has a straight bowl, a long round shank and a saddle stem. On this pipe the chamber is round. On this stem the saddle step sits near the shank end, and the bit is a wide, flat fishtail.
THE FINISH
The sandblast covers the bowl, the rim and the shank. Please see the photographs for the finish and the rim.
DATING
The gold-outlined diamond on the stem is the Brebbia mark from 1968 on, and it is still used today; this window is well documented. So this pipe was made in 1968 or later. No closer year is known.
WHAT COMES WITH IT
- a red leather bag for one pipe, with a zip (it needs a small fix; everything works)
- a 2 oz tobacco pouch
