About this Piece
BREBBIA ITALY along one side of the shank, BREVETTATO along the other: a very rare Brebbia churchwarden, made all in one piece of vulcanite - bowl, shank and stem - with a meerschaum insert in the bowl and a length of 12.5 inches.
It has been previously smoked and is in very good condition. Both stamps are clear. Vulcanite was called hard plastic in the old days; here it is not only the stem but the whole pipe, bowl and shank too. The meerschaum insert shows as a light ring inside the rim.
Brebbia began as a partnership. In 1947 Enea Buzzi and Achille Savinelli founded a joint firm at Bosco Grosso di Brebbia, in the province of Varese, and its pipes were sold under the Savinelli name. In 1953 the two went separate ways: Savinelli built his own plant at Barasso, and Buzzi kept the Brebbia factory and started the M.P.B. brand (one source dates the formal buyout to 22 June 1956). In 1968 the old M.P.B. mark gave way to a diamond logo and the brand word Brebbia alone, and in the 1990s Luciano Buzzi was managing the house.

A churchwarden is a long pipe: a small bowl at the end of a very long stem. This one is 317.5 mm long, with a bowl 50 mm high and 26 mm wide around a chamber 17 mm across and 40 mm deep, and the whole pipe weighs 34 g. The stem sweeps in a long curve from the bowl to the bit, and a small knob sits under the bowl.
The stamp reads BREBBIA without M.P.B., the form Brebbia used from 1968, so the pipe was made in 1968 or later. No narrower date can be read from the marks. Please see the photographs for the bowl, the insert and the bit.
