Boston Bruyere Extra Rusticated Small Pocket Bulldog Estate Pipe - Vulcanite Saddle Stem, Fishtail Bit

At well under an ounce on the scale, this bulldog was built to disappear into a coat pocket, not to sit on a shelf.

The shank is stamped BOSTON BRUYERE EXTRA. It is a small, featherweight bulldog, rusticated over the full bowl, fitted with a black vulcanite saddle stem and a fishtail bit. No filter is fitted.

The bulldog sits in the English diamond-shank family, a shape usually set apart from its close cousin the Rhodesian by a beveled or faceted line where the bowl meets the rim, rather than the Rhodesian's rounder cap. Shank treatment varies by maker and this example is not described here beyond what is stated: a saddle-mounted vulcanite stem, stepped down from the shank rather than tapered flush into it. A saddle stem sits higher and more square at the shank join than a taper, and it reads differently in the hand and on a rack. The fishtail bit widens at the bite point, spreading the airway across a flat blade rather than a single round bore; smokers who clench choose it because the wider bite surface takes less pressure per tooth than a round stem.

At 35mm bowl width and 17mm chamber diameter, this is a genuinely small charge - a quick load, a short burn, the kind of pipe meant for a walk or a break rather than an evening chair. The 0.9 ounce weight bears that out: light enough to forget you are carrying it, which is exactly what a pocket bulldog is for.

Rustication is a worked surface, not a stain. The briar is cut or rasped by hand across the bowl to raise a rough, irregular texture - the technique started as a way to disguise sandpits, small flaws, or uneven grain that would otherwise need filling, and it doubles as a grip texture that a smooth finish does not give you. No two rusticated bowls carve out the same pattern; the tool marks are particular to the hand that made them.

Condition: this pipe has been smoked and is graded fair. There is a chip at the shank edge. The rim shows darkening from use. The mouthpiece carries bite marks. No fills, cracks, or repairs are noted beyond these.
