About this Piece
BJARNE / HAND CARVED / MADE IN DENMARK: that is the stamp on the shank of this pipe, and it places the pipe in the Hand Carved line of the Danish maker Bjarne Nielsen. This is an amazing sandblast bent billiard with a diamond shank, fitted with a vulcanite diamond saddle stem that ends in a fishtail mouthpiece and takes no filter.
It has been pre-smoked a couple of times and is still in excellent condition. Of the three stamp lines, HAND CARVED is the faintest, and the stem carries a small bj logo.
A pipe from this workshop stamped simply Bjarne over Hand Carved belongs to Bjarne's production freehand tier. His premier pipes were stamped with his full name, Bjarne Nielsen, and graded with letters from AX down to J. The Hand Carved line was made to bring high-quality, uniquely shaped Danish briar to everyday smokers at an accessible price point.
These bowls were rough-shaped on sanding disks by carvers such as Mogens Johansen, known as Johs, and they were shaped to follow the natural flow of the grain rather than a rigid factory template. Because of this, no two Hand Carved pipes are identical.

The billiard is the classic pipe shape, a round bowl set on a shank, and on this one the bowl is 46 mm high and 47 mm wide. The pipe is bent. The shank is cut as a diamond, with flat faces, and the saddle stem is also cut as a diamond and ends in a fishtail mouthpiece.
The sandblast covers the bowl and most of the shank, and it has raised the grain into ridges and rings across the bowl. A smooth section of the shank next to the stem carries the stamp. No date is given for this pipe.
