Bari Squash Smooth Bent Billiard 9401 Danish Estate Pipe

BARI over SQUASH, with MADE IN DENMARK and the number 9401, stamped on the shank of a smooth Danish pipe. This is a Bari Squash 9401, a really unique shape from the old Danish school: a slightly bent billiard whose bowl is rounded like an egg, on a vulcanite tapered stem with a fishtail mouthpiece, made for a 9 mm filter.

The rim shows darkness and there are faint scratches around the briar. BARI, SQUASH and 9401 are clear; MADE IN DENMARK is faint. A small emblem is stamped in the SQUASH line, and a mark on the stem near the shank is too faint to read.

Bari Piber was founded by Viggo Nielsen in Kolding around the turn of 1950 to 1951, and his sons Kai and Jorgen worked in the firm from a young age until 1975. The firm followed the Danish Design that Stanwell had done most to start. Its pipes were series work: shaped first by machine, then finished by hand, with no high grades.

Viggo Nielsen sold Bari in 1978 to Joh. Wilh. von Eicken GmbH of Hamburg, when the firm had 33 employees. Age Bogelund and Helmer Thomsen then headed production until 1993, the year Thomsen bought the company, gave it his own name as Bari Piber Helmer Thomsen and moved the work to Vejen. Bari's best-known series are the smooth Classic Diamond and the blasted Wiking.

Squash is a Bari line name. A restorer's records show it on three Bari pipes: a bent apple, a full bent and a sandblasted pot. A Bari shape number names a shape, not a year, and 9401 is not on that list.

A billiard has an upright bowl; on this pipe the bowl is rounded like an egg, and the pipe has a slight bend. The stem narrows evenly from the shank to a flat, wide fishtail bit.

The finish is smooth and glossy, and grain lines show on the bowl and the shank.

No Helmer Thomsen name is seen on the stamp; that name marks Bari pipes from 1993 on, and no year is stamped, so no date is given for this pipe.
