About this Piece
BARI, SQUASH, MADE IN DENMARK and the number 7810, stamped on a smooth panel of a sandblasted shank. This is a Bari Squash 7810 from Denmark, a sandblasted straight Dublin on a vulcanite tapered stem with a fishtail mouthpiece and no filter.
The number 7810 is clear and BARI and SQUASH are readable; MADE IN DENMARK is faint.
Kolding was the home of Bari Piber, which Viggo Nielsen started there around the turn of 1950 to 1951. The house worked in the Danish Design that Stanwell had done most to start, and it made its pipes in series, each one pre-worked by machine and finished by hand. A Bari catalogue carries the logo BARI, KOLDING - DENMARK, with no year printed.
In 1978 the firm, then 33 employees strong, was sold to the Hamburg house Joh. Wilh. von Eicken GmbH. For the next fifteen years Age Bogelund and Helmer Thomsen led production. Thomsen bought the company in 1993, renamed it Bari Piber Helmer Thomsen and moved it to Vejen.
THE MARKS
- BARI on the shank
- SQUASH on the shank
- MADE IN DENMARK on the shank (faint)
- 7810 on the shank
Squash is a Bari line name: a restorer's records list Squash pipes in other shapes too, a bent apple, a full bent and a sandblasted pot. 7810 is not on that list, and a Bari shape number names a shape, not a year.
A Dublin bowl widens from the heel toward the rim, and this one does. The pipe is straight, and the stem tapers from the shank to a fishtail bit.
The sandblast covers the bowl and the shank, while the panel that carries the stamp is smooth.
No Helmer Thomsen lettering, the mark of Bari pipes from 1993 on, shows in the stamp, and no year is stamped, so the pipe is not dated.
Condition: please see the photographs for the condition.
