HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Bari Piber was founded circa 1950-1951 by Viggo Nielsen in Kolding, Denmark. The workshop became known for solid, everyday utility pipes built in the Danish Design tradition of the 1950s and 1960s - machine-roughed blanks finished by hand into reliable smokers. Unlike the high-grade artisan pipes that dominated European showcase catalogs, Bari produced series pipes in volume, prioritizing consistency and value. The Nielsen sons, Kai and Jrgen, worked alongside their father until 1975; Kai Nielsen would later establish himself as an independent artisan pipemaker, carrying forward the family's technical lineage.

In 1978, Viggo Nielsen sold Bari to Joh. Wilh. von Eicken GmbH of Hamburg, at which point the workshop employed 33 hands. Under von Eicken ownership and the direction of ge Bogelund and Helmer Thomsen, Bari maintained its identity as a maker of straightforward, hand-finished pipes. Bogelund, in particular, built a secondary reputation for distinctive freehands alongside the series work. In 1993, Helmer Thomsen purchased the company, relocated the workshop to Vejen, and rebranded it as Bari Piber Helmer Thomsen.
