Altinay Turkish Meerschaum Bent Pipe, Large Smooth Spherical Bowl, Dark Amber Saddle Stem, 9mm Filter, Fishtail Bit, Original Case

A large, smooth, spherical meerschaum from Altinay of Turkey, one of the most famous pipe makers in the meerschaum market. The pipe is bent, with a dark amber old-school saddle stem bored for a 9mm filter and a fishtail bit, and it comes in its original Altinay case.

The bowl is plain meerschaum with no carving, and the shank ends in a raised meerschaum collar where the stem joins it. Condition: please see the photographs.

THE MARKS

- The Altinay logo on a round gold disc in the stem

A spherical bowl, often called a ball, is a round shape: the bowl curves out from the shank and back in toward the rim with no flat sides.

Meerschaum is the mineral sepiolite, and Turkey, around Eskisehir, is where the best-known deposits are mined and carved. With smoking it darkens slowly over the years.
