Altinay Turkish Meerschaum Deco Carved Tall Freehand Bent Pipe, Dark Amber Stem, 9mm Filter, Fishtail Bit, Vintage

An amazing flowering, tall meerschaum pipe from Altinay of Turkey, one of the most famous meerschaum pipe carvers of all, with deco art carved over every inch of the meerschaum body. It is a freehand on a dark amber, old-school bent stem, with a 9mm filter and a fishtail bit.

It is pre-smoked and in very good condition, and the meerschaum has taken on a lovely dark color that proves its vintage and its age. It is a real collectible piece from Altinay, Turkey.

THE MARKS

- The Altinay logo, inside a circle, embedded in the stem
- No stamp on the meerschaum itself

The carving covers the whole body. Fern-like leaves cover the bowl, rosettes are carved among them, and a braided pattern runs along the shank. As a freehand, the pipe follows its own lines rather than a classic shape chart: the bowl rises tall, 55 mm high and 42 mm wide, over a chamber 20 mm across and 44 mm deep.

The dark amber stem is bent, takes a 9mm filter and ends in a fishtail bit. The pipe is 144 mm long and weighs 54 g.

Meerschaum is the mineral sepiolite, and Turkey, around Eskisehir, is where the best-known deposits are mined and carved. With smoking it darkens over the years, as this one has.
