ADMIRAL is the name on this small pipe, and the hexagonal bowl gives it a profile that is easy to distinguish from a rounded billiard. This is a straight vest pocket briar pipe, combining smooth and rusticated surfaces with a diamond shank and a light-coloured bakelite stem. It is pre-smoked and in good condition.
The stamping is recorded as UTOH, Bruyere and Admiral. Bruyere is the French word for briar, a material description that appears on pipes from more than one country. The wording alone is not used here to assign a country, workshop or production year. No fuller maker history is established for this particular example.
THE MARKS
- UTOH / Bruyere stamped on the shank
- ADMIRAL stamped on the shank
The bowl is built around a hexagonal outline rather than a continuously rounded wall. Flat faces and the edges between them give the wood a different rhythm under the light, while the combination of smooth and rusticated areas adds another contrast. The photographs show these surfaces around the bowl, including the textured panel and the flatter underside.
The vest pocket description is reflected in the low bowl: 32 mm high, with a chamber depth of 22 mm. Overall length is 136 mm and the recorded weight is 23 g. These are the measurements of the pipe shown, rather than estimates based on the name of the shape. The shallow chamber and faceted bowl are central to its compact appearance.
A diamond shank continues the angular treatment toward the mouthpiece. The light-coloured bakelite stem provides a visual contrast to the briar and ends in a fishtail bit. Bakelite is an early thermosetting plastic, distinct from vulcanite rubber. A metal threaded tenon joins the mouthpiece to the shank; the separated-stem photograph shows that fitting. This pipe has no filter.
Condition: Pre-smoked, in good condition. Please refer to the photographs for the appearance of the bowl, rim, chamber, shank and mouthpiece.
