JB is the small mark on this pipe, while the reddish sandblast and broad pot bowl supply the rest of its character. This is an unsmoked straight briar pot, fitted with an acrylic tapered stem, a fishtail bit and a 9mm filter fitting.
The initials are recorded simply as JB. They do not establish a fuller maker's name or a production date, and neither is assigned here. The interest of this pipe lies in the combination of a low, broad bowl, a textured finish and the clean line of a straight stem.
THE MARKS
- JB stamped on the shank
The pot shape is distinguished by a bowl that is broad in relation to its height. Here the external bowl measures 40 mm high and 40 mm wide, with a 20 mm chamber diameter and a 35 mm chamber depth. Those measurements describe the actual proportions without relying on a size grade or an undocumented shape chart. At 140 mm long and 42 g, the pipe brings that broad bowl into a straightforward, compact profile.
The sandblast gives the briar a textured surface in place of a polished one. Blasting works across the wood's differing densities, leaving relief that follows its structure. The reddish colour noted on this example is carried across the bowl and shank, contrasting with the dark acrylic mouthpiece. The photographs show the texture from the sides, above and below.
The stem tapers toward a flattened fishtail mouthpiece. A tapered stem narrows progressively from the shank rather than stepping down at a saddle; the fishtail refers to the flattened form of the bit. The fitting is specified for a 9mm filter. The stem-out photograph shows the connection between bowl and mouthpiece.
Condition: Unsmoked. Please examine the photographs of the bowl, rim, chamber and stem for the pipe's appearance and details.
