SUNRISE Amber Grain Briar by Chapuis-Comoy, Vintage

This reference example is a French briar pipe carrying the SUNRISE brand in its Amber Grain finish, attributed to the workshops of Chapuis-Comoy. The bowl is turned from briar, the root burl of Erica arborea that became the standard material of European pipe making by the late nineteenth century, prized for its heat resistance and its capacity to take a warm, translucent stain — the quality suggested by the Amber Grain designation, a finish style intended to display the natural figure of the wood beneath a honey-toned surface. Chapuis-Comoy occupies a significant position in French pipe history. The firm was formed in Saint-Claude, the Jura town long regarded as the historic capital of French briar pipe production, through the union of the Chapuis and Comoy families — the latter being one of the oldest names in the trade, with roots reaching back to early nineteenth-century pipe carving. The house is best known internationally for its Chacom marque, a contraction of the two family names, but like many Saint-Claude manufacturers it also produced pipes under a range of secondary and export brands. Dating pipes of this class presents a familiar challenge for the archivist. Saint-Claude workshops, unlike some English houses, did not employ systematic factory date codes on their sub-brands, so attribution to a specific decade must rest on nomenclature, finish style, and provenance rather than stamping evidence. In this instance the attribution to Chapuis-Comoy and the vintage characterisation come from the owner's account. On that basis the pipe is placed within twentieth-century French production, with the precise era left honestly undetermined — a fair and conservative bracket for a Saint-Claude workshop brand of this kind.
