The bowl is — the French term 'bruyère' names the burl of Erica arborea, the material that has defined quality pipe making since the mid-nineteenth century — and it is worked here in a smooth finish that leaves the grain of the wood visible rather than concealing it beneath sandblast or rustication. The billiard is the foundational shape of the pipe maker's repertoire: a broadly cylindrical bowl set at close to a right angle to a straight shank of roughly equal length, with proportions that serve as the baseline against which most other classic shapes are measured. A straight billiard such as this one represents the form in its most orthodox expression, and factories across Europe have used the shape as the workhorse of their standard lines.
