Stanwell Regd. No 969-48 Sandblast Bent Chimney, circa 1948–1970s

This reference example documents a Stanwell bent Chimney in a sandblast finish, an estate pipe of Danish origin recorded here with the registration stamping Regd. No 969-48 together with an accompanying RO mark. The Chimney is among the more architectural shapes in the pipe-making vocabulary: a tall, narrow, essentially cylindrical bowl whose elongated chamber concentrates the tobacco column vertically, here mounted on a bent shank-and-stem configuration that drops the bowl below the line of the bit. The sandblast treatment strips away the softer material of the stummel to reveal the underlying grain structure in relief, producing a tactile, craggy surface that Danish factories of the mid-twentieth century made a house specialty. Stanwell occupies a foundational place in Danish pipe history. The dating of this example rests on its stamping. The mark Regd. Stanwell applied this registration stamp to its pipes for a substantial period afterward before retiring it from the nomenclature, which is why the mark serves collectors as a period indicator rather than a precise date code: it establishes that a pipe belongs to the company's earlier decades of production.
