This reference example is a smooth-finished straight billiard bearing the Henri Vuillard name and the line designation LYON, presented among a group of French estate pipes. The form is the billiard — the most fundamental shape in the pipe maker's vocabulary, defined by a roughly cylindrical bowl set at a near right angle to a shank of approximately equal length, the whole resolving into a straight stem. What distinguishes this rendering is its oval shank: rather than the conventional round cross-section, the shank is flattened into an ellipse, a variation that lends a slimmer profile in the vertical plane and a subtly broader stance when viewed from above. Oval shanks demand careful work at the stem junction, where the mouthpiece must be cut to continue the elliptical line without a visible step. The pipe is fitted for a 9mm filter, the system that became the continental European standard through the twentieth century, particularly in the German and French markets.
