The apple is one of the foundational forms of the pipe-making canon: a rounded, slightly squat bowl whose curvature flows evenly into the shank, producing a balanced, compact silhouette. Rendered in smooth meerschaum rather than the ornately carved figural work for which Turkish workshops are often known, the form allows the mineral itself to serve as the principal visual interest. Meerschaum — sepiolite, a soft, white, hydrated magnesium silicate — has been mined principally around Eskişehir in central Turkey, the source of the finest block material used in pipe making since the eighteenth century. The stone is prized for its porosity, which absorbs tobacco byproducts and allows the bowl to smoke cool and dry, and for the gradual amber-to-brown patina it develops through use as waxes and tars migrate through the material. Because raw block meerschaum is worked by hand rather than turned in quantity like , pipes of this kind are conventionally described as hand crafted, a characterisation the owner applies to this example.
