Oldenkott is one of the historic tobacco names of the German-speaking market, a house long associated with pipe tobaccos and with pipes produced for the German trade. Pipes carrying the name are characteristically oriented toward German smoking conventions, the most telling of which is present here: the 9mm filter. The 9mm system — a shank mortise bored to accept a standardised replaceable filter cartridge, most commonly activated charcoal — became the dominant convention in Germany and Austria across the twentieth century and remains a near-universal expectation of pipes made for that market.
