The billiard is the foundational shape of the pipe-making canon: a cylindrical bowl set at roughly a right angle to a straight shank of comparable length, prized for its balance, its even chamber geometry, and its role as the benchmark against which factories calibrated their catalogues. A straight billiard such as this one represents the most orthodox expression of the form. The leather covering places the pipe within a decorative tradition, popular in Continental production of the twentieth century, in which the stummel was sheathed in stitched or bonded hide to lend texture, grip, and a distinctive rustic character to an otherwise conventional shape.

Hilson is a Belgian marque with roots in the town of Bree, where the Hillen family established pipe production in the nineteenth century — the brand name itself contracting 'Hillen and Son.' The firm became one of Belgium's principal pipe manufacturers, producing serially made pipes in a wide range of finishes for the European market; in the later twentieth century the name passed into the orbit of the Dutch Gubbels concern, makers of Big Ben.

Dating this example rests on modest evidence. Hilson, like most Continental factory makers, employed no systematic date coding, so the stamped shape number 81 identifies the catalogue form rather than a year of manufacture. The attribution and description derive from the owner's account, and the leather-covered finish is consistent with twentieth-century Belgian factory work. On that basis the pipe is bracketed honestly to the twentieth century, with a more precise era left undetermined.
