This reference example is a hand-crafted Turkish meerschaum pipe executed as a straight billiard, its bowl worked smooth and finished with Deco-style ornamentation. It entered the archive as an estate piece, meaning it saw service with a previous owner before being set aside as a study example. Meerschaum — sepiolite, a soft hydrated magnesium silicate — is the classic alternative to in pipe making, and the finest deposits of block meerschaum are mined near Eskişehir in western Anatolia. Turkish carvers have worked the material for well over two centuries, and since the mid-twentieth century Turkey has restricted the export of raw block, ensuring that most genuine block-meerschaum pipes on the market are carved within the country itself. The stone is prized for its light weight, its porosity — which smokers credit with a cool, dry smoke — and its tendency to colour gradually from white through honey and amber tones as it absorbs the by-products of use. The billiard is the foundational shape of the pipe maker's repertoire: a cylindrical bowl set roughly perpendicular to a straight shank, with the shank length conventionally approximating the height of the bowl. On a meerschaum the form is carved rather than turned, and here the maker paired the plain smooth bowl with decorative Deco detailing, a treatment that lets the geometry of the shape carry the design. Dating rests on typology rather than marks. Turkish workshop meerschaums are traditionally anonymous productions and do not employ factory date codes of the kind found on major English or Danish marques, so a pipe of this type cannot be assigned to a specific year on internal evidence.
