The System line is the foundation of Peterson's reputation. Devised in Dublin in the late nineteenth century and protected by early patents, the System design incorporates a reservoir bored below the airway at the base of the shank, intended to condense and trap moisture away from the smoke stream. Its companion innovation is the P-lip mouthpiece, in which the smoke channel exits through a small aperture on the upper surface of the button rather than through a conventional slot, directing the smoke toward the roof of the mouth. Together these features define the System smoking experience and remain in continuous production to this day. The metal mount at the shank-stem junction is a structural hallmark of the line; on standard-grade System pipes this mount is executed in nickel, as on the present example, while premium grades carry sterling silver.
