REJECT by Lorenzo Smooth Bent Volcano, 9mm — Mid-to-Late 20th Century Italian Estate

This reference example is a smooth-finished bent volcano from the REJECT line of Lorenzo, the Italian pipe-making concern, fitted with a 9mm filter system in the shank. The volcano is one of the more sculptural entries in the classical shape chart: a bowl that spreads broadly at its base and tapers upward toward the rim, evoking the conical profile that gives the shape its name. Rendered here in a bent configuration, the form drops the bit below the bowl line, shifting weight toward the hand and jaw in the manner favoured for a relaxed clench. The smooth finish leaves the grain of the stummel fully visible rather than concealing it beneath rustication or sandblast. Lorenzo operated as one of Italy's volume pipe producers in the second half of the twentieth century, turning out large runs of pipes across a spread of graded lines for domestic and export markets. Within that structure, the REJECT stamp identified pieces that the factory routed outside its principal graded series — a candid designation typical of the era's Italian workshops, which sorted output rigorously by grain and finish and marketed the remainder under frank secondary names.
