Savinelli Autograph G * Sandblast Freehand, Giancarlo-Era (Owner-Stated)

This reference example is a dark sandblast freehand from the Savinelli Autograph line, stamped on the shank with the arched Savinelli mark, the script Autograph designation, an engraved G, a star, and the country stamp Italy. The airway accepts a standard 9mm filter, a system characteristic of much continental European pipe-making. The shank band is absent. The Autograph line occupies the summit of Savinelli's catalogue: hand-carved freehand pipes released outside the firm's standard shape chart, each graded rather than numbered by shape. Ordinary Autograph grades run through a numerical hierarchy, and the owner reads the engraved G on this example as the personal seal of Giancarlo, with the accompanying star denoting a status above the standard 3 through 8 grades. That reading is recorded here as the owner's attribution. As a freehand, the pipe follows no fixed shape number; its form is dictated by the grain and character of the individual briar block, here expressed through a tall bowl of roughly two and one-eighth inches with a generous seven-eighths-inch chamber, in an overall length of six and a half inches. Dating rests on the stamping style and the owner's association of the G seal with the Giancarlo era of Autograph curation; the dimensions themselves were supplied by comparison with similar freehands of that period. On that basis the pipe is bracketed to Giancarlo-era Autograph production of the mid-to-late twentieth century, with the attribution resting at owner-stated tier.
