The bowl carries a smooth finish, and the shank is dressed with a silver band at the stem junction — a decorative treatment long associated with Vauen's upper-tier series, of which the Luxus designation is representative. The pipe is fitted for the 9mm filter system, the internal arrangement in which a disposable charcoal or paper filter seats inside an enlarged tenon bore between shank and stem. Vauen occupies a foundational place in German pipe history. Based in Nuremberg and tracing its lineage to the mid-nineteenth century, the firm is generally regarded as the oldest surviving German pipe manufacturer and was instrumental in popularising the 9mm activated-charcoal filter, which became the dominant convention of the German domestic market.
