Facts, not a grade. We do not score a pipe out of ten: a number would rank a restored pipe above an honest one, and restoration is exactly what this hobby prices down. Every line above is checkable by anyone holding the pipe. Lines marked Faridunhill standing declaration rest on our published, dated statement of shop practice (v1.0, 2026-07-29) — not on an inspection of this individual pipe. It is one document, in public, that you can hold us to.
VAUEN over Dr. Perl in script, and 6242: a smooth straight billiard from the house that began as Germany's first pipe factory.
This is a smooth straight billiard with a vulcanite saddle stem and a P-lip bit. It is a pre-smoked estate pipe in good condition.
THE MARKS - VAUEN - Dr. Perl, in script - 6242, with a small logo beside it
THE MAKER Vauen's roots go back to 1848, when Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener opened a pipe factory in Nuremberg, recorded as the first in Germany. Gebhard Ott founded his own pipe works in 1866, and in 1901 the two houses merged as the Vereinigte Pfeifenfabriken Nürnberg. The name VAUEN, from the V of Vereinigte and the N of Nürnberg, was coined in 1909, and the trademark was registered on 21 September 1909. Dr. Perl is Vauen's filter line: its 9mm activated-carbon filter followed in 1934. The firm has stayed in Nuremberg and in the same family, led since 1982 by Alexander Eckert, of the fifth generation.
No dating evidence has been recorded on this example yet.
Owner-stated. Facts as reported with the piece; not yet independently corroborated.Attribution is our documented expert opinion with its evidence — never a certification.
DATING The VAUEN name gives a firm floor: the pipe was made in 1909 or later. The Dr. Perl wording narrows it a little, though less firmly: our Vauen record finds Dr. Perl pipes stamped VAUEN advertised from 1927, so the name alone points to 1927 or later. It is not proof of the 1934 9mm filter system, which is dated only by the filter chamber itself. No country line or year is stamped, so we give no closer date.
THE PIPE A billiard is the plainest of the classic shapes: a round, straight-sided bowl on a straight shank, set at a right angle. Here the briar is smooth. The vulcanite saddle stem steps down from a wide section at the shank, and the P-lip bit has its raised lip and upward smoke hole.
Condition: pre-smoked, in good condition. Please see the photographs, which show the pipe from every side, the chamber from above, the stem taken out and the stamps close up.

This record is append-only. Nothing is deleted — a correction is a new entry that supersedes the old one, and both stay visible.
Nobody leaves empty-handed. If you hold the catalogue page, the dated advertisement, or a hallmarked sibling that closes one of these — or simply own this model and can measure yours — send it in. Contributions are checked, credited to you by name, and the record is updated with the date it changed.
Faridunhill shop post, 2026-10-18. Published to a third-party platform on that date and archived since — a timestamp we cannot move. It is evidence that this object existed and looked like this, then.
The photographs are the identity. 12 images of this pipe's grain, stamping and stem are held as its fingerprint. The handle above is only a handle: lose it, and the pipe can still be matched back to this record from its grain.
