This reference example is a Stanwell Jubilee smooth straight billiard, carrying the factory shape number 12 and originating from a Danish estate. The billiard is the foundational form of the pipemaker's repertoire: a cylindrical bowl set at a right angle to a straight shank of roughly equal length, with proportions that have served for generations as the baseline against which all other shapes are measured. In a smooth finish, the form places the figure of the itself on display, unobscured by rustication or sandblasting. Stanwell occupies a central position in the history of Danish pipemaking. Stanwell became notable for commissioning shape designs from leading Danish carvers, helping to translate the aesthetics of high-grade Danish handmade work into serially produced pipes, and its numbered shape chart became a fixture of the trade. The Jubilee designation is itself the dating instrument for this piece. A line stamped with that span could only have been produced for the anniversary itself, which fixes this pipe's manufacture to circa 1982 with a confidence that few standard-production Stanwells can match.
