The pipe is preserved together with its original sleeve and box, which anchors it firmly within the retail presentation of modern Italian factory work. The billiard is the foundational shape of the pipe-making canon: a cylindrical bowl of roughly equal height and shank length, set on a straight axis. It is the form against which proportion in all other shapes is judged, and its execution in a smooth, brightly stained finish is typical of contemporary Italian workshop output, where vivid contrast staining is used to display the grain of the stummel. The army mount deserves particular note.
