This reference example is a metal-bodied tobacco pipe marked with the Twin Flow name and the legend 'Pat. Pending'. The pipe belongs to the broad family of metal smoking pipes, a category of pipe-making that flourished most visibly in the middle decades of the twentieth century, when makers such as Falcon and Kirsten popularised the idea of engineering the smoking instrument rather than simply carving it. Metal pipes of this tradition typically emphasised airflow management, heat dissipation, and moisture control, and they were frequently promoted on the strength of patented internal systems — a marketing and engineering culture into which a name like Twin Flow, with its explicit reference to airflow, fits naturally. The most instructive feature of this example for dating purposes is the 'Pat. Pending' stamp. Such a marking tells the student of pipes two things: first, that the design was considered novel enough for its maker to file a patent application; and second, that this particular piece was manufactured during the interval between the filing of that application and the granting — or abandonment — of the patent.
